After rapidly gaining widespread national popularity over the past eleven months, Shark Watch Founder, Anton Covino, has declared that Shark Watch will officially expand into a national service effective from 5 November 2025. The “Shark Watch Australia” social media sites will initially act as a photographic repository for Australia wide community shark sightings for the healthy
admiration of sharks with updates filtering through to the sites on a seldom basis until the organisation has built a large enough network of interstate correspondents to begin expanding its capabilities.
The focus for the first year of SWA’s operations will be directed towards building interstate brand awareness and marketing our already popular South Australian brand by retrieving as much photographic material of sharks swimming around Australia’s coastal and offshore waters in every Australia wide state and territory. Social media has proven to be a great tool for easily documenting empirical shark sighting data that can later be shared with a demographic who enjoy learning about shark population dispersion and shark behaviour towards recreational watercraft from an empirical angle.
Other known organisations have instituted a commendable degree of research and shark attack mitigation programs in other states which utilise many of the online functions day-to-day beachgoers use to stay informed about regional shark activity. SWA intends to initially act as more of a community lead photographic repository showcasing the photographic evidence of shark activity and primarily posting photo and video submissions. Digital content has proven to be an effective tool for mass outreach and adds a more engaging dynamic to shark sightings, as seen with the Shark Watch SA project.
If we gain a significant following of interstate contributors on the SWA sites and have built proactive working relationships with relevant community, industry, and government partners from other states, we will then consider expanding our workload for SWA in alignment with our four pillar pathway that’s being developed for our SA project.
